Does Dental Implant Surgery Hurt? How About Afterwards?

By Kyle Parkway Dentistry

Considering dental implant surgery to replace missing or damaged teeth, but concerned about how bad it will hurt or the pain afterwards?

These are common fears. However, most dental implant patients say the procedure doesn’t hurt and the discomfort is minimal. Plus, implants are popular because they give patients a natural, lasting smile, allowing them to live and eat without holding back.

HOW DOES DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY WORK IN KYLE TX?

Dental implant surgery is a process; one that is performed over the course of a few months. Most of this time is spent waiting while the dentist and patient work together to ensure the outcome is desirable.

First, an incision is made in the gum. Then the implant is placed into the jawbone using a screw, which allows the implant to replace the root of the original tooth.

Second, after the implant is placed, the gums are sutured using stitches. The implant must heal for three to six months, during which time the jawbone will form around the implant. Temporary crowns can be placed to make eating, drinking, and smiling possible.

Next, after the implant has healed, an abutment must be placed on the implant. The abutment is an extension of the implant metal post and serves as the base for the new tooth. An impression of the abutment is taken and used to create the tooth restoration.

When the restoration is complete, a return visit to the dentist office will be needed to finish the process.

WILL THERE BE PAIN DURING THE SURGERY?

All of this drilling and screwing may sound painful, but you’ll be comforted to know that placing an implant is easier than taking a tooth out. Usually a local anesthetic is used, which means you are awake during the surgery.

You shouldn’t feel any pain during the surgery, especially if it is done with healthy tissue. Also, the bone where the implant is placed does not have many pain-sensing nerves. But if you’re very nervous about the surgery, you have sedative options to make you more comfortable during the operation.

WILL THERE BE PAIN AFTER THE DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY?

Immediately after the surgery and for a few days you will likely experience some discomfort. After all, this is a major dental procedure. However, any pain should be manageable.

Discomfort may be felt in the chin, cheeks, or underneath the eyes. You may also experience bruising of the skin and gums, pain at the implant site, and minor bleeding. Painkillers, such as Ibuprofen, will be recommended.

After dental implant surgery, you should use an icepack (or packages of frozen vegetables) to reduce swelling, and soft foods should be eaten after each stage of the surgery for up to 10 to 14 days.

Rinsing gently with warm salt water throughout the days following the procedure will help bathe and soothe the tissues and will offer additional relief.
